Prince William County School Board Approves 2024-25 School Calendar, Featuring Longer Winter Break

Prince William County School Board Approves 2024-25 School Calendar, Featuring Longer Winter Break
In a unanimous decision, the Prince William County School Board has approved the annual school calendar for the upcoming 2024-25 school year. Option A, which received the most support from the community, will be implemented.

Option A, preferred by the majority, includes a two-week winter break and other favorable features. The school division conducted a survey earlier this fall, which confirmed Option A as the top choice among respondents.

The approved calendar for the next school year includes important dates and adjustments:
  • Teachers will start on August 12
  • Five days of pre-service for teachers
  • Students will begin classes on a Monday
  • Spring break will be six days long, with the following Monday as a student holiday and teacher workday
  • The last day for students will be on June 12
During the school board meeting, discussions were held on further improvements to the calendar. Suggestions were made to include half-day work days for teachers, allowing them to catch up on grading and other tasks.

Board members expressed the need for additional planning time and work days for teachers in future calendars. Emphasizing the importance of professional development, they discussed the importance of being creative and flexible.

Despite differing opinions, the support for Option A in the community survey proved influential in the board's decision. Vice Chairwoman Jennifer Wall expressed the significance of considering community input when making these decisions.

The approved school calendar for the 2024-25 school year reflects the desires of the community and aims to provide the best educational experience for all.
