Floyd | Susannah

The Barns at Wolf Trap

1635 Trap Road

Vienna, VA 22182

This heartbreaking retelling of the biblical tale of “Susannah and the Elders” is considered the quintessential American opera. Set in the Appalachian Mountains, Susannah innocently incites the lust of the town elders, who demand their minister force her to repent sins for which she is not guilty. Carlisle Floyd’s use of idiomatic American folk song throughout the score captures the essence of Susannah’s plight and creates effective melodrama and lyrical storytelling solidifying Floyd’s place in the canon of great American composers. Wolf Trap Opera premiere. A free pre-show talk begins 1 hour before curtain at The Barns.

Exhibit: "Equality for All" by Sunny Mullarke

Workhouse Arts Center

9518 Workhouse

 WayLorton, VA 22079

The Workhouse Arts Center is thrilled to be the permanent home of Sunny Mullarkey’s tribute to the Women’s Suffrage Movement, “Equality for All.” This monumental mural was commissioned by the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission (WSCC) to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. The WSCC hired South Carolina-based artist Sunny Mullarkey to create artwork honoring women’s long battle for the ballot and the generations of activists who led the way toward equality.

The mural depicts suffrage leaders Carrie Chapman Catt, Mary Church Terrell, Alice Paul, and Ida B. Wells amid silhouettes of marching suffragists. The portraits of these trailblazing women are surrounded by 36 yellow roses, a symbol of the victory of the movement. At the center of the piece stands a mythological woman, inspired by historic suffrage artwork, holding a banner with the words “Equality for All.”

“Once the site of a prison where suffragists were jailed for their peaceful protests, today the Workhouse Arts Center is a vibrant complex of galleries and museums celebrating art, honoring history, and building community. We are thrilled to bring the Equality for All mural to our space as a visual tribute to the women who sacrificed and persevered throughout the suffrage movement,” said Elena Romanova, Chief Development Officer at the Workhouse Arts Center.

“Equality for All” is on display in the lobby of W-16.
